Background
- On 25 March, the Government first announced that they would work towards a proposal to be handed into the Parliament on reducing the fixed rent costs of companies suffering due to covid-19
- On 9 April, a press release announced that the Government now has come up with a proposition. It's unclear whether this needs to go through Parliament, but it does need to get approved by the EU commission
- The Swedish government is allocating SEK 5bn to support reduced rents in particularly affected industried
Details
- The proposal is made to reduce the (fixed) costs of companies with major difficulties due to covid-19 in sectors such as non-everyday retail (Sw. sällanköpshandel), hotels, restaurants and others
- The full list of industries needs to be approved by the EU and the proposal is available here
- The government proposes support to facilitate and accelerate the renegotiation of rents
- The focus is that the state bears 50% of the rent reduction, up to 25% of the fixed rent (i.e. the original rent amount cannot be more than halved)
- The aid can be applied for in retrospect and is applicable for the period 1 April - 30 June 2020
- The compensation will be applied for by the landlord, through the Länsstyrelse (e-applications will be made available at each website), at 31 August 2020 the latest
- SEK 5 billion is allocated for rental cost compensation
